Resumo Indígenas possuem uma relação intrínseca com a flora empregada em sistemas de cura. Entretanto, poucos são os dados acerca das plantas usadas no tratamento de parasitoses intestinais, uma das principais causas de morbimortalidade entre índios. Desse modo, este estudo realizou o levantamento das plantas antiparasitárias utilizadas pelos Kantaruré-Batida e avaliou se ocorre difusão do conhecimento etnomedicobotânico. Para tanto, utilizou-se entrevistas e listas livres. Foram entrevistados 31 indígenas, os quais citaram 21 espécies. A maioria dos informantes (91%) adquiriu o conhecimento tradicional por transmissão hereditária e o difunde (77%) da mesma forma. Apenas 35% utilizam as plantas medicinais como primeiro recurso de cura e associam a diminuição do uso a proximidade dos serviços de saúde. Portanto, tornam-se relevantes ações de preservação dos saberes e da biodiversidade local visando a manutenção da terapêutica indígena.

Abstract Indigenous people have an intrinsic relationship with the flora used in healing systems. However, data about plants used to treat intestinal parasitosis, which are one of the main morbidity and mortality causes among indigenous peoples, remain scarce. Thus, the aim of the current study is to survey antiparasitic plants used by the Kantaruré-Batida community and to investigate whether their ethno-medico-botanical knowledge is spread. Therefore, it adopted interviews and free lists. Thirty-one (31) indigenous individuals were interviewed and they mentioned 21 plant species. Most respondents (91%) acquired the traditional knowledge through hereditary transmission and spread it (77%) in the same way. Only 35% of the respondents adopt medicinal plants as the first cure resource, besides associating the decrease of such use to their proximity to health care services. Thus, it is worth taking actions to help preserving the local knowledge and biodiversity in order to avoid the loss of indigenous therapeutic treatments.

Resumen Indígenas tienen una relación intrínseca con la flora empleada en sistemas de curación. Sin embargo, pocos son los datos sobre las plantas usadas para el tratamiento de parásitos intestinales, una de las principales causas de morbimortalidad entre indios. De este modo, este estudio realizó el levantamiento de las plantas antiparasitarias utilizadas por los Kantaruré-Batida y evaluó si hay difusión del conocimiento etno-médico-botánico. Para eso, se utilizaron entrevistas y listados libres. Fueron entrevistados 31 indígenas e citadas 21 especies. La mayoría de los encuestados (91%) adquirió el conocimiento tradicional por transmisión hereditaria y lo difunde (77%) de la misma forma. Sólo 35% utiliza las plantas medicinales como primer recurso de curación y asocian la disminución del uso debido a la influencia y la proximidad de los servicios de salud pública. Por lo tanto, son necesarias acciones para preservar los saberes y la biodiversidad local para el mantenimiento de la terapéutica indígena.

A study about the horizontal stratification of the sand fly fauna in two distinct ecosystems, caatinga area, endemic for visceral leishmaniasis, and the tropical rain forest area, endemic for cutaneous leishmaniasis, was performed in the state of Bahia, Brazil. Lutzomyia longipalpis was predominant in the caatinga, and following it came the species L. capixaba and L. oswaldoi. In the tropical rain forest other species were found, such as L. intermedia, L. migonei, L. whitmani, L. yuilli, L.fischeri, L. damascenoi, L. evandroi, L. monticola, and L. lenti. It was found that the geographical limits of the vector species of visceral and cutaneous leishmaniasis are clearly defined by the biological and phytogeographic characteristics.

Estudos sobre o levantamento da fauna de flebótomos foram realizados numa floresta primária de terra firme da Estação Experimental de Silvicultura Tropical (EEST) do Instituto Nacional de Pesquisas da Amazônia (INPA), durante os meses de outubro de 1998 a março de 1999. Utilizando-se de armadilhas luminosas CDC colocadas a 1m, 10m e 20 metros de altura do solo, foram coletados 7.409 flebótomos, pertencentes a dois gêneros, Lutzomyia (99,98 %) e Brumptomyia (0,02%), abrangendo 39 espécies. Dentro do gênero Lutzomyia, os subgêneros mais representados foram Nyssomyia, com 39,43%, e Psychodopygus com 22,68%. O número de flebotomíneos coletados foi crescente, a partir do início da estação chuvosa.

Studies about sand flies fauna were carried out in a non-flooded primary forest at the Experimental Station of Tropical Forest - National Institute of Amazon Research, between October 1998 and March 1999. CDC light traps were placed at 1m, 10m and 20 meters above ground level. 7.409 phlebotomines were collected, belonging to the genera, Lutzomyia (99,98%) and Brumptomyia (0,02%), represented by 39 species. In the genus Lutzomyia, the more frequent subgenus was Nyssomyia, with 39,43%, followed by Psychodopygus with 22,68%. The number of sandflies collected was increased, from the beginning of the rainy station.

São apresentados resultados preliminares de um projeto sobre a ecologia dos flebotomíneos, vetores de leishmaniose tegumentar, numa área de plantação de cacau no sul do Estado da Bahia, Brasil. Nesta área existem 60 casas, afastadas entre si, onde vivem 229 habitantes e 31 cães. Entre os moradores, 45% tinham reação de Montenegro positiva; destes, 8,8% eram portadores de úlceras em atividade e 37% de cicatrizes de úlceras. Dos cães, 22% eram soropositivos. Dos 7 cães com úlceras, apenas 3 eram soropositivos. Em 14% das casas inspecionadas, foram encontrados flebótomos. Durante dois anos, 72 hamsters foram mantidos como sentinelas em casas de pacientes com úlceras leishmanióticas, porém nehum adquiriu a infecção. Foram coletados e identificados 5.614 exemplares de flebótomos pertencentes a 14 diferentes espécies. Entre estas, Lutzomyia whitmani (92%) e Lutzomyia intermedia (4,8 %) eram as espécies mais abundantes. Esses flebótomos, muito antropofílicos, podiam ser encontrados dentro das casas e nas suas periferias e são provavelmente, os principais vetores da doença no ambiente doméstico. As outras 12 espécies eram menos frequentes e mais encontrados em ambientes silvestres, onde também picavam o homem. A maioria das espécies começava a aparecer às 17 horas, no crepúsculo, e alcançava sua densidade máxima às 24 horas, quando declinava até desaparecer às 6 horas da manhã. L. whitmani em todas as fases lunares foi capturada com a mesma densidade, enquanto L.intermedia foi mais abundante durante a fase de lua nova. Centenas de flebótomos coletados mensalmente durante o segundo ano de observações, permanecem preservados em nitrogênio líquido, aguardando o ajustamento de técnicas de PCR para a verificação da taxa de infecção natural desses vetores por leishmânia. Os resultadosfinais de todo o projeto serão publicados tão logo seja examinado esse material.

Preliminary data of a project about the ecology of the Phlebotominae (sandflies) in a tegumentary leishmaniasis area of coconut plantation in the south of the State of Bahia, Brazil are presented. There are 60 dwellings far of one another, where existed 31 dogs and 229 inhabitants.Among them 41.5% were Montenegro positive; 37.5% from these had scars of healed ulcers and 8.8% had active ulcers. 53 % of the house had dogs from which 22 % were seropositive,from the 7dogs with ulcers only 3 were seropositive. 14% of the inspected house harboured sandflies inside them. During two years of observations 72 sentinels hamsters were maintened at houses of patients with leishmaniasis ulcers, but they did not get the infection. During two years of observation, monthly collectings of sandflies were made inside house, chicken pen, curral, tree trunks and open field around a house with a patient with leishmaniasis. Tlte following results were already obtained about the vectors: 5,614 specimens were identified as belonging to fourteen different species of sandflies. Among them Lutzomyia whitmani (92%) and Lutzomyia intermedia (4.8%) were the most abundant species. They are very anthropophilic and can be found inside houses and at peridomestic sites. Probably they are the principal vectors of the disease at domestic places. The other twelve species were less frequent and more found at sylvatic places in inspite they also bite the man. Generally the biting activity of most of the species of the area begins at 5 p.m. in the dusk and reaches its peak at 0 hour a. m. ,when begins declining untildisapear at 7 a.m. L. whitmani was similarly collected with the same density in all lunar phases while L. intermedia was more abundant during the new moon phase. Most of the hundreds sandflies collected during the second year of observations, remains preserved in liquid nitrogen, watching for the adjustment of PCR molecular techniques to be processed for determination of the vector natural infection rates with leishmanias. Final results on all the project will be published as soon as the examination of such material has been processed.
